Founded in December 2014, Thimble created a series of kits that help users understand the fundamentals of electronics and how hardware and software come together so they can innovate and invent from the comfort of their own home. Thimble is a unique direct-to-your-door monthly delivery subscription that contains a project with electronic components to teach kids and adults how to build a fun and useful device.
Thimble's first kit, which it is launching through a Kickstarter campaign, is a WiFi-enabled robot that users control with a phone, tablet, or laptop. The robot arrives with everything needed to build the project including a learning app that provides step-by-step tutorials to help throughout the construction process and provides a community of other makers to share knowledge and best practices. Other projects customers could receive in later months include quadcopters, alarm clocks, LED cubes, light control devices for the home, weather monitoring, and more.
The Thimble team has everything ready for production including meeting with manufacturers and suppliers, building relationships with partners, and designing future kits. They've tested Thimble kits with Maker Spaces as well as organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club. The team was recently accepted into New York's Next Top Makers Fellowship, a community-sourced incubator dedicated to connecting ideas like Thimble with local development in NYC. To date, Thimble has raised over $100,000 through its Kickstarter campaign. Go to http://thimble.io for additional information.
